In Spain, boating is still strongly associated with summer, with most outings concentrated between May and September. However, with the right preparation, winter can become a new season to enjoy the sea, with less crowding and greater freedom.

As Rodolf Guasch explains in a Forbes article about the 30 years of Hermanos Guasch: “The recreational boating sector in Spain was born in the 1960s, thanks to holidaymakers from the north who brought their boats on trailers.” Paradoxically, those tourists continued sailing all year round in their own countries, but in Spain this habit was never normalized. As a result, the perception of boating as a summer-only activity is cultural.

Below, we share the advantages and tips to help you get the most out of your boat throughout the year.

Advantages of boating in winter

1. Enjoy peace and quiet at sea

When the summer tourist crowds disappear, the most sought-after spots turn into havens of calm and serenity. Setting sail at any time of year not only removes the anxiety of trying to fit everything into a few days, but also opens the door to a more authentic boating experience. It is an invitation to reconnect with the essence of sailing: feeling the vastness of the sea and letting time flow naturally, like a cycle repeated with every wave or sunrise.

In winter, few boats, jet skis or kayaks will interrupt your journey. From the moment you leave the harbor entrance, you will be accompanied only by the gentle murmur of the waves and the wind. In short, just you, your boat and the landscape. You can even anchor in a deserted cove without having to go far. Solitary paradises, perfect for enjoying a complete disconnect, whether with company or on your own.

2. Marinas entirely at your disposal

The hustle and bustle marinas usually experience during summer is greatly reduced out of season. Their services are less crowded, allowing you to enjoy the facilities comfortably and without rush.

In addition, finding a berth in the best areas of the marina is no longer a challenge. You can choose prime locations without the typical difficulties of high season and even benefit from lower rates on certain services and berths during the low season.

Finally, common areas such as restaurants, cafés and lounge spaces become quiet and pleasant places where you can fully relax, turning every visit to the marina into a serene and enjoyable experience.

3. Strengthen your boating skills

For many sailors, heading out to sea in winter is just as exciting—or even more so—than in summer. Weather conditions and sea states are more variable, and paying close attention to them improves your skills. Reading nautical charts and making better decisions in unpredictable situations turn every outing into valuable learning.

Winter also offers the advantage of practicing maneuvers in harbors and berths without having to deal with so many boats. This gives you the opportunity to try new maneuvers without the pressure of the traffic typical of high season.

Getting to know your own boat better helps you feel more prepared and confident in any situation, such as dealing with low temperatures or stronger winds, should they occur.

The general lack of winter boating tradition in the Mediterranean will allow you to discover unique landscapes for yourself. Mornings and afternoons bathed in winter light, the calm of the surroundings, and marine wildlife that only appears at this time of year. We wish every crossing to be an enriching and unforgettable experience.

4. Take advantage of sailing in winter

Winter sailing is an excellent choice to feel the full power of your boat. Being accompanied by local winds such as the Mistral, Tramontane or Garbí—much denser due to the cold—will help you refine your technique, try new maneuvers and enjoy sailing in its purest form.

To learn through new experiences or the stories of others, we recommend taking part in social regattas or crossings organized by many yacht clubs. They are a perfect excuse to get out on the water at any time of year and also an opportunity to share adventures and learn from other sailors. And once back on land, don’t miss the traditional beer or snack to celebrate the day with the best spirit of camaraderie.

Meeting other sea lovers is ideal for discovering new horizons and practical advice, especially if you are lucky enough to meet more experienced sailors. Listening to stories and recommendations can help you get to know your boat better and improve as a skipper.

If you need crew to sail in winter, there are many sailing schools and nautical academies with crew pools where you will find people eager to share new experiences with you. Sailing with others will make every outing even more enriching and exciting.

5. Discover winter fishing

Step into a calm atmosphere with fewer boats on the water and experience a unique environment. You only need to equip yourself properly, prepare a good snack and have something warm to drink at hand. With everything ready, we invite you to enjoy the magic of the two great protagonists of the winter season: ink and white fish.

On one hand, you can catch squid, cuttlefish and octopus—highly valued cephalopods both for their flavor and for the challenge they present when fishing. On the other hand, you will be rewarded with white fish. Species such as sea bass and dentex are very common in many areas of the Mediterranean coast.

As you know, fishing is not only about catching fish, but also about enjoying the entire experience. It is a way to connect with nature and with yourself or with others that has no comparison. Enjoy the winter landscapes and the calm they provide.

So don’t think twice: adjust your gear, check the weather conditions and dare to experience a different kind of fishing day. And who knows? You may end up discovering that winter can be your favorite season for fishing.

Tips for boating in winter

1. Keep your boat maintenance up to date

Using your boat all year round, even in winter, allows you to always stay aware of its condition, ensuring it is in perfect shape to sail safely. The winter season, with less boating activity, is ideal for identifying possible improvements or repair needs and planning comprehensive maintenance without the rush of summer.

Keeping your boat up to date not only extends its lifespan, but also ensures that all systems function correctly. A breakdown at sea can be far more complicated than in other situations, which is why being prepared is crucial. Good maintenance not only protects your investment, but also gives you peace of mind to fully enjoy every journey.

Whether you own a new or pre-owned boat, trusting certified professionals is essential, especially if you wish to keep manufacturers’ official warranties valid. At Hermanos Guasch, with more than 30 years of experience, we are the official technical service for leading brands such as Beneteau, Astondoa, CNB, Sasga Yachts and Excess Catamarans, Suzuki Marine, and authorized service providers for Volvo and Yanmar. In addition, regardless of your boat’s brand, we adapt to the specific needs of each vessel and offer a wide range of services to ensure the quality of every intervention.

Remember that your boat is much more than a means of transport. It is your adventure companion. Keeping it in perfect condition not only ensures performance, but also gives you the confidence to enjoy the sea at any time of year.

2. Check your safety equipment

The winter season is perfect for bringing your boat’s safety equipment up to date. Take the time to inspect all items and make sure they are in perfect condition. Some key questions to ask yourself:

  • Are the lifelines and attachment points in good condition?

  • Is the radar reflector working properly?

  • Is the survival kit complete and up to date?

  • Are navigation lights and signaling devices functioning correctly?

  • Do you have life jackets in good condition for every crew member, even if you sail alone?

Don’t forget to check the life raft and make sure it has passed the required inspections. Other important elements, such as flares, fire extinguishers and communication systems (for example, a VHF radio with sufficient battery or ideally a portable emergency radio), should also be thoroughly checked.

If you detect any anomaly or need to replace any equipment, don’t postpone it. Having safety equipment in perfect condition is not only a legal requirement, but also a guarantee of peace of mind so you can fully enjoy every voyage.

Remember that winter boating can expose you to changing weather conditions, so being well prepared is essential. At Hermanos Guasch, we are at your disposal to carry out complete inspections or provide the safety equipment you need.

With everything in order, you’ll be ready to enjoy your adventures with confidence!

3. Check the weather forecast

In winter, consulting the weather forecast often becomes even more important, as conditions can change quickly and the sea can become unpredictable.

Avoid unpleasant surprises such as rough seas, storms, heavy rain or excessive swell. Knowing the marine forecast will not only help you plan your trip better, but also allow you to equip yourself properly to face low temperatures or adverse conditions.

We recommend downloading the following apps:

  • Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET): Provides detailed and up-to-date information on sea state, wind and swell.

  • PocketGrib: Allows you to download maps with detailed wind forecasts for the coming days.

  • Windy.app: Ideal for sailors, surfers, anglers and water and wind sports enthusiasts, offering a clear view of weather conditions in your area.

We hope you enjoy every outing with the peace of mind and safety that come from being prepared for any situation. Good weather planning is key to fully enjoying your journeys.

4. Wear appropriate boating clothing

Choosing the right clothing for winter boating is much simpler than you might imagine. The most important thing to consider is preventing the moisture that predominates during cold months from penetrating your body. To achieve this, the combination is simple: thermal base layers and waterproof windproof jackets. Between the two layers, we recommend wool, as cotton retains moisture. Make sure your winter boating footwear has good fastenings to prevent water from entering.

Just as in summer we wear sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen, in winter we also recommend the same solutions to protect ourselves from the sun’s glare on the water, similar to what happens on snow. You can also bring a moisturizing cream for your skin.

For those who suffer most with cold hands, there are heated gloves, hand warmers and hand creams available.

In addition to keeping yourself warm, you can also protect your boat by checking that it has good deck enclosures. There are also other options to keep the interior warm, such as low-consumption heater stoves.

Always enjoy your passion, regardless of the thermometer

5. Plan your trip at sea

All seasons of the year have their charm and deserve tailored preparation according to their specific conditions. In winter, with fewer daylight hours and lower temperatures, good planning is essential to enjoy your time at sea, whether it’s a long passage or a short getaway. Everything will be more comfortable if you schedule your return to port before nightfall or plan to watch the sunset near your destination.

Another always-appreciated aspect is being well stocked with food and drinks. Here are some recommendations for pleasant winter moments:

  • Always bring something to eat, even if you don’t plan to cook on board. Energy bars or a handful of nuts can be very useful to regain strength at any time.

  • Stay hydrated with something warm. The body always needs hydration, and rewarding it with a thermos of herbal tea or hot chocolate will be very welcome.

  • If you plan to cook on board, choose dishes that warm the body. Soups, broths and stews are perfect for a winter nautical menu. If you prefer to keep things simple, sandwiches and pre-cut fruit are an easy and practical alternative.

By the way, it’s common to hear that alcohol helps fight the cold. Even movies often show flasks in snowy environments, but science proves this is a myth. Although alcohol consumption accelerates blood circulation and may create a fleeting sensation of warmth, the effect is misleading and does not actually warm us or help us combat the cold.

Planning your winter sea trip well will allow you to fully enjoy the precious daylight hours, comforting meals and, if you’re lucky, a spectacular sunset over the horizon with a palette of colors that is truly special and unique.
