Night navigation is one of the most fascinating experiences for any sailor, but also one of the most demanding. Reduced visibility, reliance on navigation lights and instruments turn nighttime sailing into a scenario where safety and precision are critical.
This article outlines the key techniques, applicable regulations and essential equipment required for safe night navigation, whether coastal cruising or offshore sailing.
1. Plan your route in advance: Plot your route before departure, identifying waypoints, safe harbours and potential hazards. Use updated nautical charts and apps with integrated AIS.
2. Reduce speed and maintain constant lookout: Visibility is significantly reduced at night, so cautious navigation is essential. Establish watch shifts and keep all senses alert.
3. Correct use of visual references and navigation lights: Learn to identify the lights of other vessels, buoys and lighthouses. This is crucial to avoid collisions and maintain course.
4. Avoid white light distractions: Use red interior lights to preserve night vision. White torches can dazzle and impair dark adaptation.
Mandatory navigation lights: According to COLREGs, vessels must display red (port), green (starboard) and white (stern or all-round) lights.
Required equipment: Operational VHF radio, accessible lifejackets, fire extinguishers, flares and a torch.
Radar and AIS recommended: Not mandatory for small vessels but highly useful for traffic detection and collision prevention.
Head torches with red light
Binoculars with compass and reticle
Chartplotter with AIS or mobile app with virtual radar
Fog horn or whistle
MOB (man overboard) device with light or GPS
Autopilot with deviation alarm
Night navigation demands preparation, focus and knowledge of regulations. With proper planning and the right equipment, it becomes a safe and rewarding experience every sailor should master.
