With the end of the sailing season, the ideal time arrives to carry out an essential task in the care of any boat: winterization.

If you plan to continue sailing during the colder months, here we share essential tips and advantages for winter sailing. But if you do not plan to use your boat during this period, it is crucial to prepare it properly for winterization.

This preparation not only protects the boat’s systems and materials, but also helps prevent costly breakdowns and unpleasant surprises at the start of the next season. In short, a well-done winterization is an investment in peace of mind, safety and durability for your boat.

Below, we explain step by step how to protect your boat during the winter, whether it remains moored in the water or is taken ashore.

1. Thorough cleaning: the foundation of good winterization

Before storing the boat, it is recommended to carry out a deep cleaning both outside and inside. Remove any traces of salt, dirt, algae or organic residues from the hull, deck and waterline. Inside, clean all surfaces, bilges, compartments, galley, heads and upholstery.

It is essential to thoroughly dry every corner of the boat, especially if it will be closed for weeks or months. This prevents the appearance of damp, mold and bad odors, which can affect not only comfort but also materials and electronic components.

2. Engine and mechanical component maintenance

One of the most important steps in winterization is caring for the propulsion system and its peripherals. Change the engine oil and filters before leaving the boat inactive. If you sail in cold climates, it is advisable to drain the cooling system and add antifreeze to prevent damage from freezing.

It is also recommended to disconnect and remove the batteries, storing them in a dry place and maintaining them with periodic charging. This care extends their service life and ensures they are ready for use at the start of the season.

3. Protection of sails, rigging and covers

Sails, biminis and covers should be removed, washed with fresh water and allowed to dry completely before being stored. Once clean, it is advisable to store them in breathable bags, away from moisture and sunlight. The same applies to lines, which should be rinsed, uncoiled and stored without knots or tension.

These elements tend to deteriorate quickly if stored damp or dirty, losing flexibility and strength.

4. Onboard safety and electronic equipment

Before closing the boat for a long period, disconnect all non-essential electrical consumption. If the boat remains in the water, make sure the automatic bilge pumps are activated and working properly.

Remove portable electronic equipment such as GPS units, depth sounders, VHF radios or navigation instruments and store them at home or in a protected place. Check the condition of fire extinguishers, review expiration dates and ensure they are securely mounted.

5. Hull protection and mooring system

If you leave the boat in the water, carefully inspect the mooring system: lines, fenders and fittings. Use reinforced moorings and protect chafe points. It is also advisable to apply a protective wax layer to the hull to minimize the adhesion of dirt and salt.

If you decide to haul the boat out, make sure it is placed on suitable and stable supports. Cover it with a breathable winter cover that protects it from sun, rain and dirt, while still allowing air circulation to prevent condensation.

6. Basic winterization checklist

To make sure nothing is overlooked, here is a quick checklist:

  • Complete interior and exterior cleaning

  • Engine serviced: oil, filters and antifreeze

  • Batteries disconnected and maintained

  • Sails, covers and lines removed and stored dry

  • Electronic equipment removed and stored

  • Hull protected with wax or cover

  • Reinforced mooring (if left afloat)

  • Adequate ventilation to prevent moisture

Winterization is much more than a routine: it is an investment in the care and durability of your boat. Properly preparing your boat for winter will allow you to start the next season with peace of mind, fewer breakdowns, less maintenance and greater safety.
